The World From a Cat's Perspective

No problem for a feline like me!
Get out of my way, pooch!
Meow! Come here often?
Recently researchers from the University of Georgia and National Geographic teamed up to study domestic cats and their effect on the environment. Using a 'kitty cam' the researchers followed sixty outdoor cats in the Athens, Georgia area for a week. The researchers found that 44% of the cats hunted while they were out roaming, and 30% were successful. Cats also took many risks like crossing streets and entering storm drains. Surprisingly, cats caught lizards and earthworms, and although they stalked birds, they did not catch them as frequently as humans would imagine. Some cats also 'two timed' their owners, entering other homes for food and affection. When cats caught prey, 23% percent of them would drag home the carcass for display. Experts think cats do this to show off their prowess, and perhaps to teach humans to hunt.

The researchers advocate keeping domestic cats indoors, as it is safer for the cat. Felines are also clearly responsible for a great deal of murder and mayhem in the neighborhood.  Some of the 'kitty cam' footage was graphic.

Junior Kitty's Hair Salon

My sisters wonders: "How is it that her husband's hair is always so soft and manageable?" Does he have a special, manly shampoo? Does he use a certain conditioner?

She found out his secret grooming tip and filmed the evidence.

Cat saliva.

Here is her cat Junior licking his hair. The cat will corner him, without fail, after every shower.

Bizarro Kitty Acts

My cat Harper is kind of weird. She's obsessed with running water, and she's got a thing for lettuce. I can't get her to eat most cat foods, but she'll gnaw on a carrot.

Beary Weary

Isn't this little polar bear, at the Nuremberg Zoo in Germany, is the cutest thing ever? At 4 weeks old & 3.75 pounds, the zookeepers decided to raise the cub, because its mother appeared to reject him/her (they don't know the sex yet).

Mother polar bears will often eat their young if rejected for some reason. Since polar bears are endangered, the scientists dutifully stepped in.

Before you call the zoo & ask for the adoption papers, remember that little cubby will grow to between 660 & 1,320 pounds or more, and "will eat anything it can kill." I guess that pretty much rules out joyous, carefree petdom in the American suburbs for little polar bear.
(And I thought my kitties were intrusive)

The Naming of Cats....

The Naming of Cats
by T.S. Eliot

The naming of cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm mad as a hatter
When I tell you a cat must have three
different names.

First of all, there's the name
that the family use daily,
Such as Victor, or Jonathan,
George or Bill Bailey--
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names
if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen,
some for the dames;
Such as Plato, Admetus,
Electra, Demeter--
But all of them sensible everyday names.

But I tell you,
a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that is peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he
keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers,
or cherish his pride?

Of names of this kind,
I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quazo or Coripat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellyrum--
Names that never belong
to more than one cat.

But above and beyond
there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you will never guess;
The name
that no human research can discover--
But The Cat Himself Knows,
and will never confess.

When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought,
of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

Nora, The Cat That Plays the Piano

We featured Toonces, the driving cat, earlier. Now it's time for Nora-- the cat that takes piano lessons.. I was doing a search for scenes from my favorite movie, "The Piano," on YouTube, when I came across this video of Nora. She's an older gray and white fluffy feline, with that matronly paunch. Her huntress days are over, so she's taken up a new hobby. Watch! Long, but amazing.....

Toonces, the Driving Cat

Some friends referenced to this skit in conversation last night. It's from SNL, the late 80's I think. I don't recall ever seeing the skit then, but I looked it up on YouTube. Classic silly Steve Martin humor. Actually, it's very funny to me that Toonces looks exactly like my kitty, Harper. I better hide those car keys. When we run out of kitty litter, she might take matters into her own paws.....

Can your kitty pass this eye test? Can your kitty follow a point in space with alacrity and accuracy, without becoming cross-eyed or passing out? My Willa did, paws down. Watch!

Eye of the Tiger; It's the Thrill of the Fight

My friend J. has a few posts on his blog about formidable opponents. (See Mr. Mercurial, on the sidebar). He has links to queries about 'who would win?' in match-ups of mythical proportions. I understand on the Discovery Channel there's a show called "Animal Face-off" with computer animated & real duels. Who would win in the following battles? The Grizzly Bear vs. the Cougar, the Lion vs. the Hippo, the Walrus vs. the Polar Bear, The Gorilla vs. the Crocodile?
It's something I haven't given much thought to. I'm hopelessly non-competitive and squeamish about blood by nature.
But his postings got me thinking... Right Here in my very own apartment there are duels to the death going on as I write. After all, I live with two felines that have nothing but murder and mayhem on their minds. (pretty much 24 hours a day, except when they're napping & resting up for their next hunt) There isn't a thing in this apartment (including myself) that these two ferocious felines haven't bitten, scratched, torn apart, or eaten.
So.... who would win??? against my felines........

I put my kitties up against 3 formidable opponents, and video taped them in the act. Here are the results of three fights in the ring. (warning:may be too bloody for some viewers)
1. Kitty vs. Lederhosen Man--

Okay, he may have no arms or head, & he's wearing those faggy flowered shorts.... but he comes from a long line of German military pomp and stance.
Results: Lederhosen Man was quickly prodded, molested, & tossed aside.
2. Kitty Vs. Nunzilla

They say she's full or spitting fire & bitter spewing Catholicism.
Results: She showed some spunk early on but was summarily
knocked over...

3. Kitty vs. Slinky Dog

He may be floppy-earred & cute, but he's a canine after all....
Results: Toyed with, then kitty ran away. A win for the Slinky Dog...
