Edward Gorey

Google is featuring Edward Gorey today. I guess he would be 88 if still living. I wish he were still living! In any case, in April I plan to visit his house on the cape, now a museum. There's a watch and I'm sure several other items I will want to acquire. Love my Edward Gorey, ever since college. That old queer, fantastically creative, anglophile, sarcastic, bibliophile, cat lover....

Feed the Kitty

Here's my sister J's favorite Warner Brothers cartoon. The large bulldog, Marc Anthony, falls in love with a kitten, Pussyfoot. He can't let his owner discover the sweet kitty. Original release-- 1952.

Amish Man Saves Paris Hilton -Part 1

Amish Man--Avenger of the Olden Days-- Saves Paris Hilton from the Maddening Crowd

1. It happened one day that Amish Man was visiting Los Angeles at the very moment Paris was released from jail....

2. Amish Man was in CA to promote his new book, "The Goodly Life of Tillage."

3. Several people worldwide clamored for Amish Man's book.....

.

Amish Man Saves Paris- Part 2

4. The maddening crowd wanted to sacrifice Paris Hilton to the Goddess of Crass American culture. Paris' cries were heard by Amish Man. He gallantly jumped up in front of the crowd, spread out his arms in a godly manner, and bellowed.......

5. The crowd retracted, and Amish Man and Paris were whisked away into a nearby limo, & brought to the Hilton Estate....

Saving Paris- Part 3

6. The Hilton family offered money in exchange for Amish Man's bravery. In a most stoic & godly tone, Amish Man humbly declined......

7. Paris insisted. For her part, she actually found Amish Man "pretty hot for an old guy wearing a weird wool hat." She noted his somewhat charming calloused hands, and manly physique from years of farming. For his part, Amish Man noted Paris was "a comely maid." (Still, no match for Amish Woman of course)

8. Finally, Amish Man accepted a lifetime service of free beard trimmings for all the gentle Amish men in his village, including himself, from a top notch hair salon in Philadelphia, courtesy of the Hilton heiress.
The End

My Favoritest Cartoonist

Roz Chast
My Favorite Cartoonist in the Whole Wide WORLD is a woman named Roz Chast. I discovered her in the mid-1980's, and during those tender years bought some of her first & now unpublished works: Parallel Universes, Unscientific Americans, & Mondo Boxo. Her cartoons are quirky, & capture the bizarre in the mundane world of household interiors and daily life. This brilliant woman is the funniest person on the planet, in my opinion.

For over 25 years Roz Chatz has rendered numerous cartoons (800 or so) for New Yorker, and has published numerous books. She's also illustrated album covers and children's books, etc... The New Yorker is where Roz Chast got her start in 1978. Her first published cartoon was called: "Little Things," a black & white line drawing of small, oddly shaped tiny objects named 'chent,' 'spak,' & 'tiv.' Like many inanimate objects in Roz's cartoons, the 'little things' seemed to have a life & voice of their own.

Roz Chast's latest book ----Theories of Everything----is a compilation, and a book that I must own at some point soon. I'm waiting for the paperback.

Perhaps you've heard of or seen Roz Chast? Below are several of her brilliant cartoons, (click on to view more closely) and a link to an interview she had with Steve Martin. Roz is just as quirky in person as her cartoons. She was way funnier than Steve Martin, hands down! (And he's funny!)

Sally the Camel

Yesterday I visited my two nephews and niece. At 6:45 a.m. I was awakened by the following little ditty. My two nephews (age 6 & 4) sung the song at the top of their lungs. Of course I succeeded in waking up. The song was ringing in my head all day. I drew some cartoons to accompany the song.

Two Amazing Cartoonists

I came across a contemporary cartoonist recently, and liked his work very much. His name is Greg Klamt. His work reminded me of a cartoonist from the 80's, whose books I collected for awhile. His name was Ken Brown. Both artists use images linked with a 'play on words.' Very amusing. Check out Ken's book and Greg's website below.

Procrastination Condemnation
Procrastination: If you are guilty...
I finally got around to writing this…. (ha,ha)
Seriously, if you are a procrastinator, (like me), never fear! There are many excellent self-help books published with practical tips for the wayward. A few on my bookshelf include:
Time Management From the Inside Out, by Julie Morgenstern,
It’s About Time: the Six Styles of Procrastination & How To Overcome Them, by Dr. Linda Sapadin.
Overcoming Procrastination, by Albert Ellis & W. Knaus.
The Procrastination Workbook: Your Personalized Program for Breaking Free from the Patterns That Hold You Back, by W. Knaus.
If you can’t manage thumbing through a book, then you can take an online quiz to find out what type of procrastinator you are. http://www.drsapadin.com/quiz/quiz_time.phpAre you a pleasure seeker? A perfectionist? Are you anti-authoritative? Are you dreamy & inattentive? Are you an over-achiever?These are all excellent questions to pinpoint your particular procrastination demons.
Even with the books, quizzes, or kicks in the butt from Mama or the Boss, you may still find the plague of procrastination dogging you. So, here are my tips to change your thinking about procrastination. There’s no point in feeling guilty or stressed!!! Use these thoughts as armor to guard yourself against despair. Sooooo sit back, re-watch that re-run episode of Law & Order, and eat that popcorn…
1. Think of all the famously great people who were also procrastinators. Look at Proust for example. It took him years to write “The Remembrance of Things Past,” and most of the time he was lying in bed!
2. Think to yourself: “I could be dead tomorrow, so at least today I’m not wasting time doing boring tasks like going to the bank, sorting laundry, etc…. I’m having fun!”
3. Think of the Buddha. He certainly was a great person. No one can argue against that!. And he spent hours, weeks even sitting under a Bodhi tree not doing much of anything!
4.Think to yourself: “There’s always tomorrow! And tomorrow! And tomorrow! And it’s always a day away. (Thank god)
6. Think to yourself: “I’m not procrastinating. I’m just waiting for more creative and brilliant ideas to take root.”
Check out my own 'Did You?' procrastination cartoon below....
